Gharansay Ibnul Ameen: It is about power

Gharansay didn't hold my little banner because I didn't scramble fast enough to meet her - but here we are making eye contact. Well, eye to iphone contact. She is a tremendous speaker and she spoke from the heart. She is in the field so to speak, in the middle of the changing challenge of women in Afghanistan and it is exciting to hear her. She is the winner of the 2019 Woman of Distinction award by the UN NGO Committee on the Status of Women. At 22 she is recognized for her work in women's education, leadership and ethnic harmony.

Gharansay is co-founder of the Afghan Girls Sustainable Education Project, the Global Youth Development program and the Team Ambassador in the Everywoman Everywhere Project. She was able to build her Young Women's Leadership Conference in Afghanistan for more than 1000 participants through patience and not taking no for an answer, as far as I can tell. She brings the voices of women and youth together for peace building in many ways.

She was told that she was too young and that she would not make a difference.

Her advice:

1. Don't listen to negativity.

2. Go to the grassroots - then grow from there.

3. Share information. She emphasized that so many cannot come to the UN often because visas were denied into the USA and that resources may have been lacking. We have a responsibility to these sisters to share what we learn.

4. Women matters are heart to heart. Use storytelling to share role models and mentors.

5. Empower yourself and then let the power go to empower others. It is not your power to keep butit is your power to share.

In his opening statement, the Secretary General said the Commission on the Status of Women could be called Status of Power. The world has lost her way, pushing back on women's rights.

This panel shines the path for that lost world . She will find her way.
